What makes a product truly sustainable? Our checklist for conscious decisions.

Was macht ein Produkt wirklich nachhaltig? Unsere Checkliste für bewusste Entscheidungen.

The terms "sustainable," "green," and "environmentally friendly" have become indispensable in today's product world. But what does sustainability really mean? And how do you know if a product actually meets these standards? In this blog post, we provide you with a well-founded checklist to help you make informed decisions - for a home that is not only beautiful but also responsibly designed.

Origin & transport routes: Regional instead of global

The first step toward sustainability begins with a product's origin. Where was it manufactured? Short transport routes mean lower CO2 emissions and simultaneously strengthen local economies. Look for labels like "Made in Europe" or certificates of origin.

Ask yourself:

  • Is the product manufactured in Europe or even near you?
  • Is there transparent information about the supply chain?

Tip: At Kanela, we consciously work with manufacturers from Portugal and Lithuania – this reduces emissions and creates fair working conditions locally.

Materials: Natural, durable, compostable

Sustainable materials are the core of an environmentally friendly product. They are biodegradable, recyclable, or extremely durable. Typical examples include linen, wood from sustainable forestry, or naturally dyed cotton.

Pay attention to:

  • Certifications such as OEKO-TEX, GOTS, FSC
  • Natural instead of synthetic fibers
  • Raw materials with clear origins

Why this is important:  Materials like linen use significantly less water to produce than cotton and are naturally robust – ideal for long-lasting favorite pieces.

Fair production: people and the environment in focus

Sustainability means not only environmental friendliness, but also social responsibility. Fair production ensures that people work under ethical conditions, are paid fairly, and that exploitative practices are avoided.

Checklist:

  • Is there information on wages and working conditions?
  • Are family-run businesses or certified manufacturers mentioned?
  • Is production carried out locally or in low-wage countries?

Example:  Our carpets and bed linen are produced in small factories with whom we work in partnership.

Packaging & Shipping: Less is more

Packaging is also part of the product and often an underestimated sustainability factor. Low-plastic, recyclable, and reusable packaging is the norm here.

What to look out for:

  • Is shipping plastic-free or low-plastic?
  • Is recycled cardboard used?
  • Is there CO2 compensation for shipping?

Fun fact: Kanela ships climate-neutrally in recyclable boxes without unnecessary filling material.

Durability & Repairability: Design with Vision

A product is sustainable if it will accompany you for many years. Therefore, high-quality workmanship, timeless design, and ease of repair are crucial.

Questions you should ask:

  • Is the product robustly made?
  • Are there spare parts or repair services available?
  • Was the design thought out so that it would not go out of fashion?

Our claim at Kanela:  We don't want our products to be just for a current trend, but for years to come. That's why we focus on classic shapes, earthy colors, and high-quality materials.

Conclusion: Buying consciously means living consciously

You can identify sustainable products not by a green label, but by transparent information, clear values, and lasting quality. With our checklist, you can make choices that enhance your everyday life – without harming the environment or people.
